How to Adjust a Bicycle Derailleur

A bicycle derailleur is a mechanical device used to change the gears of a cyclist’s bike. It operates by a cable connected to a shifting toggle. The cyclist presses the toggle to tighten or loosen the chain and move the cage. This mechanism moves the guide pulley under the selected sprocket. The cage pivots around a mounting point to accommodate increased or decreased slack in the chain. A higher gear setting forces the chain to travel outward.

The rear derailleur is located below the rear cassette and is secured to the bike chassis by a bracket. The rear derailleur consists of a spring-loaded parallelogram linkage that has two pulleys. The upper pulley drives the chain into the sprockets, while the lower pulley takes up any slack so that the chain stays tight between the driving and driven sprockets.

To check the cable tension of your bicycle derailleur, stand the rear wheel on a stand. Shift gears with your hands. If there is a lag between shifting and the chain moving, then the cable tension is too low. To increase the tension of your derailleur cable, adjust the black cylinder on the derailleur cable. If you find that the chain jumps when changing gears, the barrel adjuster needs to be adjusted.
