Buying Biking Long Pants

The right pair of long pants will prevent chafing, add extra weather protection, and keep your legs warm. They can be bike-specific or a pair of street clothes that have been tailored with cycling features. They might have a built-in padded chamois, or front panels that are windproof and quick drying. Many come with a cuff on the chain-side leg that rolls up to reveal reflective trim and keep the cuff from getting caught in the crankarm. They might also have a zippered pocket on each hip to hold keys, a credit card or cash, and even a small tube of sunscreen.

The Blacklines are a good example of a pair that look just as at home being worn around town as they do on the bike. They have a slim fit that’s well-suited for riding, and they have a comfortable waist system with no zip or fly, so you can wear your normal belt with them. The fabric is a little thinner than that used by the Rapha and Yeti pants, which makes them slightly more breathable, but still feels great for sustained movement.

It’s a good idea to try on long pants in the store before buying them, since sizing varies across brands and models. Cycling shorts will always look baggy when you’re standing up in them, but once you crouch down into the cycling position they’ll mold to your body and smooth out. Look for a wide waistband that’s comfortable while you ride, and a secure adjustable elastic system at the cuffs to keep them in place while you pedal.
