Biking Down Haleakala

Experience the awe of watching the sunrise at Haleakala and biking down the dormant volcano on this adventure. This tour includes transportation to the summit for the sunrise before your bike ride down the mountain and ends in the picturesque town of Makawao. This is a self-guided tour with a rental of a mountain bike and helmet, as well as all other necessary gear. The bike ride itself is approximately 23 miles with the longest portion being downhill!

Start the morning at 71 Baldwin Ave in Paia, where you’ll receive a backpack, bike lock, and rain/wind gear to prepare for your adventure. A van will then take you to 6,500 feet where the bike ride begins. During this time you’ll be given an overview of Haleakala National Park from your guide.

Once on the bike you’ll be taken through a winding ranch road, and then into a National Park section of the trail. Here you’ll see a wide variety of vegetation as you make your way to the top of the Crater, where the sun will rise.

At the summit you’ll be able to soak in the stunning beauty of the crater, and on a clear day the views will be endless! At this point you’ll want to be sure to bring a jacket because it can get very cold on the summit.

From here you’ll be able to enjoy some of the best downhill biking on Maui! As you continue to descend, the terrain will change to more of a farmland feel and as you hit the bottom of the mountain, you’ll enter into the Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) town of Makawao. With great restaurants, art galleries, and boutique shops, Makawao is a fun place to explore at your leisure.
