Whether you’re looking to record ride data, use your phone as a GPS or plan your next outdoor adventure, there’s an app out there for all cyclists. The most comprehensive cycling apps utilise the GPS function of your phone to create a host of statistics including speed, time and distance biked. They can also play voice prompts if you’re riding with friends, keeping track of who’s leading and giving kudos to the best riders on the day. They can even act as a navigation tool with built-in directions that you can follow on the screen while you pedal.
Strava is one of the world’s most popular cycling apps. Its segment feature delivers automatic rankings of your performance over popular stretches of road or trail (known as segments) and works with many bike computers to show your performance in real-time on the fly. The app is free to use, but a premium subscription costs PS55 per year to unlock full functionality and route planning.
Another great app for route planning is Komoot. It routes rides for you, using a variety of resources including CycleStreets and OpenCycle Maps. It will also identify essential points of interest, such as cafes and bike shops, on your route, while highlighting road conditions such as potholes and gravel.
Several other useful biking apps include First Aid, which teaches you the basics of bike maintenance and rescue techniques. It’s a good idea to know this in case you encounter an accident, or a flat tire.
