One of the simplest and most cost-effective upgrades, the right handlebar tape can significantly improve comfort and control. It’s quite literally where your hands connect with the rest of the bike, and the best option will balance cushioning and a direct/high feedback feel to suit you and your build. Tape is available in a huge range of materials, thicknesses, surface textures, prices and colour/pattern options to suit every taste and budget.
The choice of material for bar tape is important; it must be supple enough to conform to the shape of the bars and avoid wrinkles, yet robust to withstand repeated contact with rough surfaces. Cork blends and foam are good choices, but may be prone to breakage and need to be replaced more frequently than polyurethane or microfibre alternatives. Leather is a more expensive option, but provides excellent grip in varying weather conditions and is easier to clean than other tapes.
Silca’s Nastro Piloti is a dual-compound tape with a textured outer and a foam core that maxes out at 2.5mm thick. It feels grippy, absorbent and comfortable for most riders, especially on fast paced rides, although it can feel slightly bulky on aero shapes.
Lizard Skins DSP is the choice of many in the pro peloton, providing a luxurious feel with an extra layer of padding. The 2.5mm option is a little thin for most riders, but thicker versions (up to 3mm) are available. The tape is easy to wrap and has a high level of comfort, plus it comes with aluminium expanding bar plugs rather than the simple plastic ones normally included.
